Germplasm Trademark Development

The NZDFI byline, ‘breeding tomorrows trees today’ is a commitment to adding long term value to the breeding programme that will contribute to sustaining an ongoing research programme for durable hardwoods. Therefore a trademark is under development that will be used in the future to brand and market genetically-improved durable eucalypt germplasm.

This branding will assist the NZDFI in promoting the establishment of durable hardwood forests and provide MRCT the basis to licence the commercial marketing, distribution and sale of the germplasm by members of the initiative and others in the forestry sector. The trademark will be used for the sale of seed or cuttings for the species that are improved under the NZDFI breeding programme. The brand will provide future forest growers with quality assurance when purchasing seedlings. MRCT will require payment of a royalty on the sale of eucalypt seedlings by commercial nurseries that propagate and sell NZDFI improved durable eucalypt seedlings. The royalties collected will provide for a direct contribution to ongoing durable eucalypt research and improvement by the NZDFI project.
